L'Unité d'Archéologie was created in 1982 by the City of Saint-Denis, in parallel with the archaeological excavations begun in 1973 north of the basilica of Saint-Denis. This 13-hectare excavation site located in the heart of the city of Saint-Denis stopped in 1992.
The missions of the archaeology unit are: excavate, publish, restore, conserve and document. The Archaeology Unit manages the preventive archaeological operations carried out in the district.
Since 1996, the UASD has published publications such as the Historical Atlas of Saint-Denis, edited by the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme.
The archaeology unit also transmits the knowledge resulting from its research to the population with its cultural mediation project on the theme of "Archaeology, territory and citizenship".
The Unit offers archaeology workshops for children on Wednesdays. The archaeologists of the UASD offer guided visits of the Fabrique de la Ville.
The Archaeology Unit manages and preserves the archaeological objects discovered on the territory.
It also hosts the UTICA laboratory (Unité de Traitement et d'Information en Conservation Archéologique) and the practical work of the Maîtrise des Sciences et Techniques en Conservation of the University of Paris I and the Laboratory.
A "house of archaeology" in the heart of Saint-Denis
The Archaeology Unit is located in a former school in the heart of the city, right next to the Saint-Denis Paul Eluard Museum of Art and History, of which two rooms are dedicated to archaeology with the presentation of more than 600 objects from the excavations carried out by the UA.
