Parks and Woodlands in North-East Paris

ParksThe Seine-Saint-Denis Parks and Gardens

North-East Paris has plenty of green open spaces for walkers to enjoy: over 1500 hectares, or 10 m2 per head of population. The 10 departmental, regional and communal parks offer a wide variety of landscapes and walking trails and include the Buttes-Chaumont park in Paris, La Courneuve park, the Sausset park, the Poudrerie Forest Park, the Ile-Saint-Denis departmental park, Haute Ile, the Bondy forest and the Jean Moulin-Les Guilands departmental park...

In these parks, walkers can also enjoy a multitude of different facilities such as sports circuits, table tennis tables, roller skating circuits, walking trails, mini-tennis, boules, play areas and more...

At the Parc de la Villette, wander from meadows to themed gardens and take advantage of the park's many events: don't miss its famous open-air film festival, which livens up Parisian summer nights every year. Guided tours of La Villette are available all year round (on foot, on scooter, on theme, etc.).

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is a beautiful, undulating Parisian park with shady lawns, a pretty lake, fountains and even several restaurants.

park Valbon la CourneuveYou can also visit the Parc Départemental de la Courneuve, the largest park in the Paris region in terms of surface area, and explore its 400 hectares of woods, valleys, lakes and waterfalls.

Why not also discover the natural riches of the Parc Départemental du Sausset, where flora and fauna have regained their full rights, and where a relaxation and self-control trail has been set up in the forest?

At the Parc Départemental de l'Ile-Saint-Denis, you can stroll along the "Impressionist Trail", which offers numerous viewpoints over the Seine, while at the Parc Départemental Jean Moulin Les Guilands, children and parents can discover an island of greenery in an urban environment, ideal for relaxation and sport.

Parc de la Poudrerie, meanwhile, is a pleasant place to stroll in the midst of an unspoilt forest. Here you can discover the remains of the Poudrerie Nationale and the Musée des Poudres.

January 2021: the Fosse-Maussoin park in Clichy sous bois will be extended to 14 hectares, with the creation of play areas, a belvedere, two new entrances and the planting of 9,000 trees - in short, an ideal place for strolling, running and more. Within a year, the park is scheduled to expand again, to 22 hectares.

Urban park, community park

A number of municipal parks are very popular with local residents, offering walks, entertainment and a welcome change from your usual park. You can take a stroll in the Parc Duclos in Blanc-Mesnil (a 24-hectare urban park), the Parc du Croissant Vert in Neuilly sur Marne is also an urban park not far from the banks of the Marne, while the Parc Beaumont in Montreuil is classified Natura 2000 and easily accessible by public transport.

Tremblay en France's urban park was completely redeveloped in mid-2020. Artist Tadashi Kawamata has installed some twenty tree houses and nests. An urban park with a large pond, a "ring" play area for children, a relaxation area and a sports area with apparatus.

2020: the Ecological Reserve in Epinay sur Seine opens to the public after 12 years of neglect... Workshops are offered every month.

Wood and/or forest?

The best-known forest in Seine-Saint-Denis is the Bondy forest, which extends over several communes.Tours and events are offered by AEV. They are free, but places are limited.

November 20, 2021: Bois Saint-Martin in Noisy-le-Grand opens to the public. This large wood (ancient oak forest) is a protected area; a real green lung between Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne, with a flora and fauna that make it a little jewel to be preserved. Together with the other surrounding woods, it forms the Maubué regional forest (departments 93-94-77).

Walk around the lake?

Many parks have either a lake, a pond or simply a body of water. Strolling or eating is permitted around the various bodies of water in the parks, some areas being a little better equipped (benches and/or picnic tables) than others. On the other hand, swimming and fishing are prohibited in the lakes and ponds of the departmental parks.

Lake in the Parc Valbon in La Courneuve ! Georges-Valbon in La Courneuve is the only park to offer, in high season, a paying boat rental service on the Grand Lac. You can also stroll around the upper lake, the Etang des brouillards...

In Sevran's Parc de la Poudrerie, you'll find three small bodies of water: la mare en croissant, la mare au martin-pêcheur and la mare à l'Ilôt.

The Parc du Sausset boasts the Etang de Savigny, while the Parc Jean Moulin les Guilands has a pond.

Parc de la Haute-Ile is in a class of its own, situated as it is between the Marne and the Chelles canal. It has several natural aquatic areas dedicated to animals.

Greenery to explore

In partnership with the Seine-Saint-Denis Parks and Gardens department, the parks visitors centres, the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds), CORIF (Ile-de-France Centre for Ornithology) and associations such as the Friends of the La Poudrerie Forest Park, the Seine-Saint-Denis Tourist Board invite you to come and discover the wealth of flora and fauna in these parks.

Workshops, exhibitions, nature rambles and environmental awareness activities for all interests and all ages are organised throughout the year in the various parks, as are a wide range of sporting and cultural events and festivals. All these activities are free and led by nature enthusiasts who are happy to share their passion with you for a few hours.
