Centre for National Monuments

The Centre des monuments nationaux is a public institution of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. It manages, animates and opens to visitors nearly 100 national monuments owned by the State. Some of them are among the most prestigious: the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, the castles of Angers and Azay-le-Rideau, the castle and ramparts of the city of Carcassonne, the Arc de Triomphe and the Sainte-Chapelle, to name a few. Other monuments illustrate the richness of France's heritage of all periods through their diversity: abbeys, castles, prehistoric caves, archaeological sites...

The mission of the Centre des monuments nationaux is to promote this heritage, to develop accessibility to the greatest number of people and to ensure the quality of the reception. With more than 100 events per year, it promotes the participation of national monuments in cultural life and the development of tourism, in cooperation with regional cultural affairs departments, local authorities and networks of cultural institutions.

Since 2007, it has been entrusted with a new mission of conservation, restoration and maintenance of the monuments it manages, but also of project management of restoration work on other monuments belonging to the State and assigned to the Ministry of Culture and Communication.

At the same time, the institution is pursuing a dynamic action to win over new audiences and commercial distribution, with particular attention to the publishing sector. The mission of the Centre des monuments nationaux is to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about heritage and to its enhancement. As the delegated publisher of the heritage services of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, it publishes under the brand name Éditions du patrimoine a very wide range of publications, from tourist-oriented works to high-level scientific publications of international scope.

The Centre des Monuments Nationaux has 1,500 employees serving the public and, as of 2007, has an annual budget of 140 million euros, financed by its own resources (ticket sales, rentals, commercial and publishing revenues, sponsorship) and by a tax revenue allocated to it. It welcomes nearly 8 million visitors per year to the monuments entrusted to it.
