The Cathedral Basilica of Saint-Denis hosts Gael Mooney's exhibition Les gisants en lumière from May 23 to September 21, 2025.
This New Yorker discovered the recumbent statues of Saint-Denis in 1992 in Jean-François Noël and Pierre Jahan's black-and-white photography book Les Gisants. Since then, the American painter has visited the basilica every summer to paint the recumbent figures and explore the site's unique light.
The exhibition presents a retrospective of the artist's paintings and drawings inspired by the basilica's recumbents and Gothic architecture, and sheds light on Gael Mooney's career and the relationship between herself and the monument.
A guided tour of the exhibition Les gisants en lumière by Gael Mooney herself will be offered.
