MC93 is located in Bobigny and can be easily reached from downtown Paris (20 minutes from Gare du Nord with the subway).
André Malraux, French Culture Minister wanted for every French department to have its own “Maison de la culture with "... the aim to offer everyone, whoever he is, wherever he is, a tempting introduction to culture...". La Maison de la Culture de la Seine-Saint-Denis is one of the seventh “maison de la culture” created in the territory. Contemporary shows or classical works portrayed by theater, dance and music, it features a repertory beyond all frontiers. MC93 was founded in 1974 at the Centre Dramatique National d'Aubervilliers, to assist in the creation of a new department Seine-Saint-Denis. Other cultural centers such as Gérard Philipe Theater, Théâtre de la Commune or the new theater in Montreuil were also built between 1960 and 1970.
In 1980, the Maison de la culture was in two places : Aulnay theater and Bobigny theater. In the latter, the building was built on the former site of the “salle de fetes de l’Union. In 1990 extension works of the backstage and the hall began. And in 1999, the building was completely renovated with an extension of the north facade in glass, the creation of workshops (costumes, decors, lights...) and various equipment needed for a smooth functioning were added. These last parts of work were carried out in 2005 essentially in the big hall.
Maison de la Culture de la Seine-Saint-Denis, now named MC93 Bobigny is the place for creation and production, it presents a contemporary repertoire of French shows as well as works presenting the richness of world literature. In 1985, René Gonzalez, stage director, former director of Théâtre Gérard Philipe Saint-Denis became head of Maison de la Culture Bobigny and provided the impetus for international creation by calling for example Bob Wilson or Marcello Mastroianni. In 1989, Ariel Goldenberg succeeded him for eleven seasons and he continued to promote works carried out internationally. Since 2000, Pascal Sommier has become head of this place devoted to creation focusing on live arts. In order to develop and support these Europeans creations, he created the festival "Standard Idéal” in 2003. And to really enjoy the theater; there is a restaurant and a bookstore waiting for spectators too!
In March, 2015, Hortense Archambault was nominated as the new director of the theater MC 93.
