The French Rugby Championship was created in 1892 under the aegis of the USFSA omnisports federation. A rugby committee was put in charge of the event. From 1921 onwards, it was taken over by the fledgling French Rugby Federation. Since 1998, it has been organized by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby. The winner of the French championship is awarded a trophy known as the Brennus Shield.
The formula has evolved considerably over the years. With the introduction of professionalism in 1995, the number of clubs in the elite division dropped from 24 to 16, and finally to 14 in 2005. It became known as the Top 16 and then the Top 14. The championship final takes place at the Stade de France.
