Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin presents asolo exhibition of works by Franco-Chinese artistYan Pei-Ming, part of a new series in the Eye to Eye exhibition.
Through his canvases, Yan Pei-Ming explores a diversity of subjects, oscillating between imposing and intimate formats. His works depict lions, monkeys, Pablo Picasso, and even the artist himself in the guise of a pope, enhanced by self-portraits. His art establishes a link between the animal kingdom and humanity, myth and intimacy, tradition and the instantaneous, seeking to capture a common vital essence through the art of portraiture.
Although deeply influenced by the history of European painting, Yan Pei-Ming increasingly draws on his Chinese heritage, skilfully fusing Eastern and Western traditions.
The exhibition features a monumental three-part work entitled "Autoportrait en trois personnes" (2020), first shown at the Palais des Papes in Avignon in 2021. This piece consists of two self-portraits framing a third in which the artist depicts himself as a pope. Although he was born and raised in Shanghai, far from Christian iconography, it has always held a strong fascination for him due to its importance in art history, leading him to choose the pope as his subject as early as 2003.
