Galerie Ropac once again presents an exhibition dedicated to the painter Georg Baselitz, EinBein von Manet aus Paris.
The exhibition Ein Bein von Manet aus Paris features monumental paintings, intimate works on paper and a bronze sculpture created by Georg Baselitz over the past year. The paintings on show continue the 87-year-old artist's ongoing struggle with the conventions of portraiture, focusing on the two subjects that have most marked his seven decades of artistic production: himself and his wife, Elke. Working on the ground, the artist used a walking frame to navigate the canvases, transforming the lines drawn by the wheels into a central element of the composition. This new marking technique testifies to Baselitz's relentless desire to experiment.
Galerie Thaddaeus has presented numerous exhibitions dedicated to the painter over the years.
The last Baselitz exhibition at Galerie Ropac was presented in 2023 to mark the German artist's 85th birthday, with 5 series of paintings and ink drawings produced between 2020 and 2021. One of the series is devoted to portraits of Georg Baselitz's wife, Elke.
In 2019, the Time exhibition at Galerie Ropac in Pantin was devoted to the series of paintings the artist created as a tribute to his wife, Elke. Some thirty portraits were exhibited, accompanied by as many drawings.
The Descente exhibition in 2017 featured a selection of paintings, graphic works and sculptures that reinterpreted works by artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Ferdinand von Rayski, Otto Dix, and his own pieces such as Die Grossen Freunde (The Great Friends). You could also see portraits of his wife Elke.
